Disappointed USI and the University of Evansville will not play another men’s basketball exhibition game this year. UE lists an open date of Oct. 26 for an exhibition, but indications from USI coach Rodney Watson are that his team will not be filling that date. Too bad because I still believe that an annual UE-USI preseason exhibition would be an outstanding charity fundraiser for the community. Besides, the Aces are going to win this game 99 times out of a hundred despite what USI fans might want to think. But that one loss is, I guess, what UE is most worried about.
Really, I can’t get my head around that. I don’t know what such a loss would affect. Recruiting? Not quite. I can’t imagine a UE rival using that as a way to keep potential players away from Evansville. School pride? Repeat after me — it’s an EXHIBITION GAME. It doesn’t count. It’s a practice game. If losing a practice game is a blow to your pride, you need to lie down in a cool place.
They’re all just excuses anyway. But there are no excuses for avoiding a game that could raise big bucks for charity. Shame on whoever keeps putting the brakes on this.
