USI men’s basketball coach Rodney Watson thinks they’re no big deal and can’t understand why people (i.e., sportswriters like me) make a big deal out of them. Still, with the addition of Truman State to the GLVC this year, USI is going to have to travel all the way to Truman State’s campus in Kirksville, Mo. — which is in far northeastern Missouri — as well as all the way to Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo., and William Jewell in Liberty in far northwestern Missouri. And that doesn’t include trips to Quincy and Wisconsin-Parkside.
“Long road trips can’t bother anybody,” Watson told me. “This isn’t high school. Road trips are just part of college. That’s part of the fun of college. That’s a non-factor.”
