Aaron Nelson, leader

Not much going on, basketball-wise, at USI right now, other than players working out and playing in pickup games. I catch up with Aaron Nelson for my column running in Tuesday’s print and online edition of the C&P (it’s now up here). He’s still recovering from ACL surgery on his right knee, so he can’t get into any of those pickup games yet. But  he seems to be doing well. In addition to what I will be writing about in the column, here are some outtakes from his observations watching the aforementioned pickup games (Nelson’s been encouraged to take a greater leadership role, which he appears to be doing with gusto):

On returning senior forward Manny Ogunfolu: “We need Manny to be more aggressive on the offensive boards and more aggressive on defense. Like I’ll tell Manny to switch up and guard Orlando (Rutledge). But he’s way more aggressive and can score. He already has a solid mid-range jumper and can guard multiple positions. He looks good, real good.”

Nelson’s take on senior guard Ben Jones: “I’ll tell Ben to be a little more aggressive going to the basket. Ben has been doing a lot more ball handling. He already shoots a thousand shots a day.”

On senior forward Taylor Wischmeier: “He’s expanding his game more, shooting on the perimeter more. He’s been getting way higher on rebounds, which he has to do with Keith (DeWitt) leaving.”

On senior point guard Lawrence Thomas: “He’s picking up his scoring a lot more. He’ll probably do a lot more shooting this year. He’s also been a lot more verbal.”
