I’ve decided Twitter is just a more elaborate game of telephone. Somebody tweets something as a suggestion or a very thin possibility or even wishful thinking and it quickly becomes “fact.” Lately, a couple of tweets have said that Rodney Watson, USI’s men’s basketball coach, is a finalist for the Ball State head coaching position. That’s an upgrade from the rumor I shot down a couple of weeks ago that said he had been interviewed by Ball State. And, again, both are false. The whole thing is getting to be annoying, except apparently to Watson. When I asked him about his being a finalist, he laughed harder than I’ve ever heard him laugh. When he had calmed down, he said, “I think that can be a good job for somebody, but it’s not me.” By the way, I also talked to other sources, including USI athletic director Jon Mark Hall, who also said he’s heard nothing — not from Watson or any school asking to talk to Watson. I’m not saying the situation won’t change. Anything can happen during the silly season of college basketball coaching changes (Tubby Smith to Texas Tech or Steve Alford to UCLA, for example). But it’s not happening with Rodney Watson. Not now, anyway.
