If USI’s men’s basketball team could arrange to play ranked teams the rest of the season it would probably win the NCAA Division II national championship. Four times the Eagles have played ranked teams this season and four times they have won. And they have won convincingly in each of those games.
It began with the 69-55 victory at home over Indianapolis on Jan. 19. It continued with the 72-53 win at Kentucky Wesleyan — the largest margin of victory by a USI team over KWC in the series’ history — on Jan. 21. Then the Eagles beat visiting Bellarmine 62-49, holding the Knights under 50 points for the first time in five years. Then came Thursday night’s 87-62 road drubbing of UIndy — the Greyhounds’ worst loss of the season (its second worst was the defeat at USI) and just their second at home.
One more interesting note: Rodney Watson has yet to lose a game at the University of Indianapolis. His USI teams since he arrived on the West Side are now 4-0 at Nicoson Hall.
The reason behind all this, at least this season, has to be the red road uniforms. The Eagles have not lost when wearing the red (and haven’t won wearing their blue roadies). I would guess the student managers will be spending most of the day on Friday washing the red unis.
