Not a surprise that USI’s Orlando Rutledge is the GLVC Player of the Week in men’s basketball. Although the honor is for his 27-point game in the win over Cedarville, he’s been hot for a while now. In December’s four games, he averaged 23.8 points and shot 52.5 percent from the field (31-for-59). He also shot 41.4 percent from 3-point range (12-for-29) and 77.8 percent from the free-throw line (21-for-27) as the Eagles went 3-1. In that lone loss, to Nova Southeastern in the Fern Valley Hotel Classic at Bellarmine, Rutledge hit his career high for the first time: 27 points on 9-for-19 shooting, including 5-for-11 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-4 at the line. He also grabbed five rebounds — three off the offensive glass — blocked two shots, had one steal and committed just one turnover in 31 minutes. At least he didn’t have anything to do with USI losing by a point. If he keeps playing like that he’ll drive opposing defenses nuts.
