Only one undefeated team remains in Great Lakes Valley Conference women’s basketball, and it’s not UIndy. It’s USI. Yes, the Screaming Eagles at 8-0 are all by themselves heading into the Christmas break. Granted, UIndy lost to the No. 1 team in Division II, Ashland, by a score of 70-54, dropping the Greyhounds to 6-1 and down to No. 7 in the USA Today Women’s Basketball Coaches poll. Wisconsin-Parkside is the only other ranked GLVC team, at No. 24. USI isn’t ranked because, let’s be honest, the Eagles haven’t beaten any outstanding teams. Cedarville, their most recent opponent and win, was the only team with a winning record.
Everything changes on Thursday, Jan. 3. That’s when USI plays its next game and conference opener, at home against Missouri-St. Louis. UMSL is 4-3 (and 0-1 in the league). Then comes Maryville — 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC West after a 73-64 win over UMSL on Dec. 5 — at home on Saturday, Jan. 5.
One thing that could help USI is that the players seem to get along well. In fact, they seem to be friends. One of them recently posted a picture on Twitter showing them together for a Christmas gift exchange in one of the player’s apartments. They all looked very happy.
That camaraderie will be tested over the next couple of months. If their friendship can survive the heat of the GLVC schedule, this team could go far in the postseason. Just a guess, anyway.
