Notre Dame women’s basketball coach Muffett McGraw earned her first coach of the year nod from the U.S. Basketball Writer’s Association since 2001 on Thursday.
Will it a good omen? After all, McGraw was last honored when the Irish won a national championship. Now she has the Irish back in the Final Four for a third-consecutive season after losing in the championship game the past two seasons to Baylor and Texas A&M.
If nothing else, there has to be good news in the fact that no Texas schools reached the Final Four this season, right?
Louisville took care of highly favored Baylor in a regional semifinal game.
On Sunday night, Notre Dame will face the only other top-seed to reach New Orleans, Connecticut. The game will tip at 7:30 p.m. CST.
Louisvlle and California will square off in the other semifinal at 5:30 p.m.
Baylor coach Kim Mulkey had won the coaching honor the previous two years.
Coverage alert: In Sunday’s Courier & Press sports section I will have a column on Notre Dame player Ariel Braker, who grew up in Evansville and would have eventually player at Memorial High. However, her family moved to Michigan when she was an eighth grader.
