First off, a couple of disclaimers: We can’t make Reitz at TH South the Game of the Week because Reitz was involved the Game of the Week for Week 1 and Reitz-Castle will almost assuredly be the Game of the Week for Week 3.
Secondly, Mater Dei at Tri-West Hendricks could also be a legitimate Game of the Week, but it’s on a Saturday and traditionally, we always make it a Friday night game.
So by default of sorts, our game of the week is…drum roll please…New Albany at Castle. Let the howling begin!
GAME OF THE WEEK
NEW ALBANY (1-0) at CASTLE (1-0), 7 p.m. Friday
It’s only week 2, but this is a huge game for the Knights. There’s no shame in going up to TH North and losing, but you would think it would’ve been a lot closer than 27-11 if Castle is indeed good enough to challenge Reitz and Mater Dei for SIAC supremacy. At this point at least, they aren’t. New Albany routed Clarksville Providence 44-7 in its opener.
Prediction: Castle 35, New Albany 21.
REITZ (1-0) at TERRE HAUTE SOUTH (1-0), 6:30 p.m. Friday
As I said earlier, this obviously would’ve been a good choice for Game of the Week. But Reitz was already involved in Game of the Week in Week 1. I expected the Panthers to beat Henderson County handily, but 62-14? Wow. Reitz is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A while TH South is No. 6 in 5A. The Braves beat Ev. North 26-7 in their opener.
Prediction: Reitz 28, TH South 21
INDY HOWE (1-0) at HARRISON (1-0), 7 p.m., Friday
Harrison coach Cory Brunson said his team was fast and multi-talented and the Warriors certainly proved it in a 54-9 romp over Madisonville North Hopkins, which included an 85-yard kickoff return by CJ Hedgepeth for one touchdown and a 90-yard kickoff return for yet another touchdown by Elizjah Harvey soon thereafter after a Maroons’ field goal. QB Ryan Hales ran for two scores and threw for two others. However, Howe is coming off a 74-21 dismantling off Indy Broad Ripple.
Prediction: Harrison 42, Howe 35
MEMORIAL (0-1) at HENDERSON COUNTY (0-1), 7 p.m. Friday
Both teams are coming off tough losses. Leading 14-8 at the half, the Tigers surrendered 20 successive points in losing 28-14 at Jasper. Henderson was pounded 62-14 by Reitz. If Memorial can sustain its first-half effort for a complete game, it will beat the Colonels. But that’s a big if.
Prediction: Memorial 21, Henderson County 17
WASHINGTON (0-1) at BOSSE (1-0), 7 p.m. Friday
Trailing 11-8, Bosse stormed back to beat Pike Central 26-11 and give Eric Schnur a victory. But oh, the humanity! The Bulldogs won despite being penalized 17 times for 105 yards, several on illegal procedure calls. Washington lost 35-13 to Boonville, so Dawgs could start 2-0 for the first time since 1994.
Prediction: Bosse 28, Washington 10
CENTRAL (1-0) at PAOLI (0-1), 6:30 p.m. Friday
The Bears pounded outmanned Indy Marshall, which had 17 players, 53-0. Paoli lost its opener 51-27 to Brownstown Central. Looks like Central is going to begin the season 2-0.
Prediction: Central 42, Paoli 21
NORTH (0-1) at INDY BROAD RIPPLE (0-1), 6 p.m. Friday
Something’s gotta give as someone is going to get its first victory. The Huskies lost 26-7 to mighty TH South while Broad Ripple was routed, 74-12, by Indy Howe.
Prediction: North 28, Broad Ripple 10
MATER DEI (1-0) at TRI-WEST HENDRICKS (0-1), 2 p.m. Saturday
This is another game that could’ve been Game of the Week, but as I detailed previously, it’s on a Saturday and we make our Game of the Week a Friday game. It also lost a bit of its luster because Tri-West lost its opener to then-Class 3A No. 7 West Lafayette 43-23 last Friday. Tri-West, which was No. 1 in 3A, dropped to No. 8. MD raced to a 35-0 halftime lead, settling for a 35-14 win over hapless Indianapolis Northwest when the Space Pioneers scored a couple of TDs against the Wildcats JV team in the second half. Drayke Richardt was in midseason form, scoring on all three carries for MD, then taking a well-deserved seat on the bench.
Prediction: Mater Dei 35, Tri-West 21

Last week: 6-2.
