It didn’t take long for the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference’s decision to play out all soccer games that are tied at the end of regulation to provide a classic.
Memorial beat Mater Dei in penalty kicks Monday evening at the EVSC Fields after the girls’ game was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation.
Then the teams played two seven-minute overtime periods with each squad scoring a goal.
Then the defending state champion Tigers closed it out 3-1 in PKs to move to 2-0 on the season. Memorial is ranked No. 4 in Class 2A while the Wildcats are No. 3 in Class A.
“I like it,” said Reitz athletic director Beth Hagan. “This way our kids won’t look like deer in the headlights if games get to PKs in the tournament. Now, they can experience it beforehand.”
