Andre Thomas appears to be leading candidate to become North’s new boys’ basketball coach

Andre Thomas appears to be a leading candidate to become North High School’s new boys’ basketball coach, according to several sources. The EVSC will hold its next board meeting on Monday night.
Thomas led Bosse’s girls’ basketball team to a 49-44 record in four seasons, including a Class 3A sectional title and an 18-7 record in 2013. The Bulldogs were just 3-20 this past season, but Thomas was blessed with little experience or talent.
He also has served as Bosse’s football coach, posting a 12-31 mark in four years. The Bulldogs finished 7-5 and advanced to the 3A championship game in 2013. They were 2-9 last fall.
It makes sense that Thomas would be seeking his first boys’ basketball head coaching opportunity. He was also reportedly upset that the Bulldogs will move up from 3A to Class 4A in football this fall, after the IHSAA’s latest reclassification. Bosse is pretty much always going to struggle in football. They usually have talent at the skill positions, but lack the overall numbers to be competitive on a consistent basis.
North is still a relatively new school at its U.S. 41 location and boasts good facilities and is the second-largest school in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference, behind Castle. Thomas, a Harrison graduate, played college football at the University of Toledo and college basketball at John A. Logan and SIU Edwardsville. He would be an excellent choice for the Huskies.
North Posey’s Heath Howington’s name has also surfaced as a candidate to replace former North coach Scot Bunnell. Howington guided the Vikings to a 14-11 record this past season and is 31-40 in three years overall.
Bunnell resigned his position as North coach early last month. He led the Huskies to 11-10 and 12-9 records in 2011-12 and ‘12-13, marking the first time they had back-to-back winning seasons in 13 years. Bunnell was 45-60 in six years at North, including 11-24 in the SIAC. He is expected to remain at the school as a health and physical education teacher.
