Castle grad Welch stuns nation’s No. 2-ranked wrestler at 157

Doug Welch, a redshirt junior from Castle High School, upset the nation’s second-ranked 157-pounder, James Green of host Nebraska, in the tiebreaker, 5-4, on Friday night. Welch was one of two Purdue wrestlers victorious in its 25-6 loss to the No. 12-ranked Cornhuskers.
“I believed in myself,” said Welch in a statement. “I was relaxed and ready to go. The coaches believe in us and I felt confident going into the match. (Head) Coach (Tony) Ersland stresses going out there and wrestling to the best of our ability. Wrestle hard and wrestle tough and the wins and losses will take care of themselves.”
The upset of Green (18-2) marks the highest-ranked foe Welch (19-6) has beaten in his college career.
Welch, twin brother Chad and younger brother Luke all wrestle for the Boilers.
