Here are a couple of schedule changes…
The postponed Castle at Central baseball game has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Mater Dei’s baseball game at Harrison that was rained out Tuesday has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. on May 7 at Harrison. The Wildcats’ original schedule had them hosting Princeton on May 16. That game has already been played.
Southern Illinois University men’s basketball coach Barry Hinson went local in landing his latest three recruits.
Tyler Smithpeters, a 6-foot-4 guard who led Harrisburg to Illinois’ Class 2A state championship, signed Friday to play for the Salukis. He averaged 17.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists in earning 2A first-team all-state honors.
“Tyler is very versatile – he handles the ball well, has really good shooting range and is a great passer,” said his father, Harrisburg coach Randy Smithpeters. “He gets just as much satisfaction from assists as scoring.”
The youngest of five children, Tyler is the brother of former Saluki Kyle Smithpeters, a walk-on guard who played for SIU’s 2005 and 2006 NCAA Tournament teams. Kyle is currently head coach at John A. Logan College, just outside Carbondale.
On Friday, Hinson also landed Rend Lake College forward Bronson Verhines and his younger brother, Dawson, who will also transfer from Rend Lake to SIU and join the Salukis as a walk-on.
Bronson, who is 6-7, will be a senior at SIU while Dawson, 6-3, will be a junior.
Bosse product Jalen Pendleton will be a junior at SIU next season. He came on strong the second half of the season.
Bosse High School junior standout guard-forward JaQuan Lyle is reportedly hosting Indiana University men’s basketball coach Tom Crean and Rick Pitino, coach of NCAA champion Louisville, this week on official in-house visits.
IU and Louisville, of course, are among Lyle’s six finalists. Stay tuned.
The Mater Dei at Central softball game has been rescheduled for Monday. The junior varsity game is scheduled to begin at 4:30, with the varsity to follow.
However, if there is a threat of rain, the varsity game will be played first.
The Castle at Harrison softball game has been postponed until May 9. The JV game will start at 5, with the varsity to follow.
Harrison, Castle and Day School will compete in golf at Rolling Hills at 4 p.m. on May 15
The Central at Reitz softball game was rained out on Thursday. It has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. on April 24.
Perry Fairrow, a 6-foot junior guard from Bosse High School, tweeted Friday that he had been contacted by the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s basketball coaching staff.
Fairrow, who has been offered a scholarship by IPFW, averaged 20.8 points and 5.1 rebounds in gaining Courier & Press all-Metro honors. He helped lead the Bulldogs to a 19-6 record and the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference Tournament title.
Jalen Pendleton, formerly Fairrow’s Bosse teammate, recently completed his freshman season as a reserve at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, SIUE’s sister campus.
Blake Simmons and Jaylon Brown, who soon be teammates on the University of Evansville men’s basketball team, will be opponents on Sunday, April 14, at the 25th annual North-South All-Star series at Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute.
The girls’ game will start at 1 p.m. CDT, with the boys’ game set for 3.
“It will be cool to play against him,” said Simmons, a 6-foot-5 guard-forward from Castle who will play for the South.
Brown, a 6-foot guard from Fishers, will play for the North.
They will both be incoming freshmen at UE.
