North Knox grad Ashley invited to Bucs’ spring training

Nevin Ashley, a catcher from North Knox High School, was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as a minor league free agent and invited to major league spring training.

Ashley, 29, hit .235 with six home runs and 28 runs batted in, playing in 80 games for Louisville, the Cincinnati Reds’ triple-A affiliate last season. He threw out 26 percent (16 of 81) of the baserunners who attempted to steal against him and committed only one error in 74 games behind the plate.

After his prep career, Ashley played for Indiana State University. He was chosen in the sixth round of the 2006 MLB draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.

About Gordon Engelhardt

Many moons ago, I was a semipro baseball pitcher and my love for the grand old game continues unabated. I was lucky enough to cover the White Sox in the 1983 ALCS and the Cubbies in the 1984 NLCS while living in northern Illinois. I have covered several Cardinals games, but never in postseason.
