Cardinals’ Allen Craig has sprained foot

The St. Louis Cardinals can breathe a sigh of relief.

Allen Craig has a sprained left foot, but no fracture, according to The Associated Press and The Sporting News. With hopes of a postseason berth looming, the Cardinals feared they had lost Craig for the season when he went down in a heap on Wednesday night. Matt Adams filled in admirably at first base, belting solo homers in the 14th and 16th (the latter a game-winner) inning in St. Louis’ 5-4 win over the host Cincinnati Reds.

X-rays on Craig in Cincinnati were inconclusive. He was sent back to St. Louis for an MRI. More X-rays indicated that nothing was broken.

Craig, a 29-year-old who played in the All-Star Game for the first time, was hitting .314 with 13 homers and among the National League leaders with 97 runs batted in. He also had 29 doubles.

About Gordon Engelhardt

Many moons ago, I was a semipro baseball pitcher and my love for the grand old game continues unabated. I was lucky enough to cover the White Sox in the 1983 ALCS and the Cubbies in the 1984 NLCS while living in northern Illinois. I have covered several Cardinals games, but never in postseason.
