The Evansville Otters announced the release of former University of Southern Indiana right-handed pitcher Taylor Dennis on Wednesday morning.
Signed by Evansville on April 22, Dennis went 2-1 in 12 appearances for the Otters this season. The 2010 Division-II World Series Most Outstanding Player sported a 5.45 earned run average and allowed 1.81 walks/hits per inning pitched. Dennis appeared his first six games out of the bullpen and his last six as a starter.
In his most recent start on August 2 at Lake Erie, Dennis went 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs and walking eight. Leading 4-2 in the sixth, he had retired 10 of 11 batters in a row before giving up a home run to Vincent Mejia. Dennis then proceeded to walk the next three batters before being removed for reliever Jose Velez, who allowed a go-ahead two run single to push the Crushers ahead 5-4.
Prior to joining Evansville, Dennis was a 34th round draft pick by the Texas Rangers in 2011. The Covington, Indiana native pitched well in his first two seasons in the minor leagues before his release after struggling in high-Class A Myrtle Beach last year.
