Otters re-acquire Nick Schwaner, who is second in franchise history in HRs

First baseman Nick Schwaner, who is second in Evansville Otters history with 25 career home runs, has returned to Evansville. He was traded to Southern Maryland of the Atlantic League at the end of last season, but is back after a trade with the Blue Crabs. Schwaner will start the season on the injured list.

Princeton’s Jeff Goldbach holds the franchise record with 36 homers. He hit 19 in 2005 and 17 in ’06, in helping lift the Otters to their lone Frontier League championship.

Evansville also acquired catcher David Cruz, who spent the past two years in the Miami Marlins’ organization. He will join Kolin Conner as the two Otters catchers.

Evansville will open at Normal at 7 p.m. on Friday. Zach Petersime, who received a “cup of coffee” with Norfolk, the Baltimore Orioles’ triple-A team last year, will start on the mound for the Otters.

Evansville and Normal are meeting in the season-opening series for the third time in the past five years.

LHP Blake Monar (Rockport) and RHP Taylor Dennis (USI) are the Otters’ area connections to start the season.

About Gordon Engelhardt

Many moons ago, I was a semipro baseball pitcher and my love for the grand old game continues unabated. I was lucky enough to cover the White Sox in the 1983 ALCS and the Cubbies in the 1984 NLCS while living in northern Illinois. I have covered several Cardinals games, but never in postseason.
