Southwestern Indiana mayor joins Pence’s administration

Petersburg Mayor Jon Craig is resigning his post effective Jan. 25 to become the new deputy director of the Office of Community and Rural Affairs under Lt. Gov.-elect Sue Ellspermann.

“I’m very excited about the new opportunity. At the same time, it’s going to be a changing of the guard here in Petersburg, which gives me a little bit of a heavy heart because this has been my passion for the last nine years. But I’m looking forward to the new challenge,” he said.

Craig will be replaced through a Pike County Republican Party caucus. The local party chairman, Mike Goodpaster, is expected to set a date for that caucus by Wednesday.
The new mayor must be sworn in within 30 days of Craig’s official resignation date. Until then, the city council president will serve as the interim mayor.
